Justine Emard challenges images’ materiality through different media including photography, video, installations and augmented reality. Many of her works explore the paradigms of cinema which involve screens, frames and the out-of-frame. Her visit to Dallas in 2008 marked a turning point in her creative journey as she started studying the disappearance of drive-in theaters. This decisive moment led her to go after street walls featuring the white-painted rectangles of anonymous people, which she recorded and photographed.
Artworks follow the idea that images tend to disappear progressively with time, questioning notions of memory and loss. This theme is still active in her current creations, especially within a series of photographs called Timeline where she frames the landscape using openings in abandoned buildings. The artist’s interest in ruins, derelict places, and architecture concurs with an attempt to inject new forms of life. Emard resists melancholic post-modern temptations and imagines ways to look at things anew.
Her recent work focuses on the representation of the human body in opposition to robotics, AI, and artificiality. Emard explores this subject with the use of screens and video installations, resulting in exhibits like Reborn and Co(AI)xistence.
Justine Emard (French, born 1987 – ) graduated from Clermont-Ferrand School of Fine Arts. With shows in France, Japan, South Korea, China, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and Columbia, she earned global recognition in the digital art scene. Institutions that displayed her works notably include the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), the Villa Médicis (Rome), NRW Forum (Düsseldorf) and the Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
